The  Lions were out ‘plucking the greens’ (cai qing) in London Chinatown tonight. Dancing to the sound of drumming and firecrackers, the Lions pulled the lettuce and red envelopes  (lai see) from the local businesses. The greens went back to the business and the red envelope went to the Lion.

The London  celebrations are the biggest in the world (outside China) and the Year of the Horse will launch at 10am on Sunday, 2 Feb with the annual parade: www.timeout.com/london/things-to-do/chinese-new-year-in-london

Patricia Lim has a great post about Chinese traditions here: www.vancouverobserver.com/blogs/explainer/2012/01/23/red-envelopes-firecrackers-and-astrology-chinese-new-year-traditions
