There are some windows across the road from the Sheldonian Theatre, just above the shop front of Blackwell’s Bookshop. Behind the shutters lies the private office of Sir Basil Blackwell (1889-1984) who was known as ‘The Gaffer’. The office has been preserved from 1984 with personal items such as a hat, coat and pipe still laid out and bookshelves stocked with fascinating titles.
Euan from Blackwell’s Bookshop was kind enough to invite me with my camera and there will be some further posts over the next week. The office was also open this year for the annual Oxford Open Doors festival and well worth seeking out next year.
