Ceiling Art

The sign outside Piccadilly Arcade promised ‘Birmingham’s Best independent Retail Shops’ and this originally lured me inside. A slightly smaller sign advised me to look up. It was good advice. The ceilings host an unexpected series of dramatic trompe-l’œi murals.

Opened in 1910, the building was originally The Picture House Cinema  and showed silent films. The space was transformed into a shopping arcade in 1926 and the artist Paul Maxfield created the work called ‘A Life in the Year of the Chinchillas’ in the 80s.
