Alice in Brighton

The opening scene of Alice in Wonderland is said to have been inspired by Lewis Carroll’s visits to Brighton. In particular, a dark tunnel in Sussex Square’s private gardens. It leads out to the sea and Lewis Carroll explored it while staying with his sister at number 11. The Alice Dreaming mural by Sara Abbott (http://sara-abbott.com/murals.htm) and the Mad Hatters (http://www.madhattersandfriends.co.uk/ ) are just two examples of how the theme of Alice in Wonderland has in turn inspired the locals in Brighton.
